The Bigjigs Story

Bigjigs Toys Ltd was founded in 1985 by Peter and Liz Ireland, both teachers in their previous careers. They decided to develop a company that would make learning fun with the use of traditional wooden toys.

At the very beginning Peter and Liz could be found working in their garden shed, cutting out pieces of wooden jigsaw puzzles by hand. They would sell the jigsaw puzzles at local craft fairs and agricultural shows, travelling far and wide to find their customers.

Since then, the team has outgrown the shed and operates from a 45,000 sq ft warehouse in Kent, South East England, UK. Peter and Liz’s two sons have also joined the family business and helped extend the Bigjigs family to a team of 35+ dedicated staff who are passionate about educational and fun toys has since grown into a toy empire that sells toys in over 90 countries worldwide.

Our current range of toys extends to over 1600 high quality products, including the popular Bigjigs Rail collection, dolls, outdoor toys, role play items and of course, wooden jigsaw puzzles!  Today our ranges are stocked independent toy shops in over 40 countries throughout Europe, Australasia, South Africa and the USA.

We also distribute a variety of brands of toys from all over the world and bring them to the UK toy market including, Green Toys and Petit Collage from USA, Gigi Bloks from Latvia, Gowi from Austria(, Rubbabu from India) and Playcolor from Spain.  The Bigjigs values resonate through all of the distribution brands for a traditional toy which gives the user increased play and educational value often made from natural or recycled or recyclable materials.

    Hi,
I would like to purchase the rose cottage but I am concerned about the ethical standards under which it was made. I can’t find any verification that your employees in offshore factories are treated well and paid fairly. Please let me know how I can access this information.
    Thankyou,
    Jess

      Hi Jess,

Thank you for getting in touch. At Bigjigs Toys , we believe in applying certain basic principles of ethics to our business operation. We apply these ethical standards not only within the Company itself but also, to the best of our ability, ensure that they apply within the supply chain to the Company. All parties to whom this code applies are expected to comply with local, national and international laws.
Bigjig Toys s recognizes that its supplier base may not be able to achieve all the standards laid out in this code immediately but is willing to engage with suppliers who :
      • Have implemented or are willing to implement processes which will raise the standard of the production facility
      • Demonstrates transparency
      • Demonstrates commitment towards improving working standards

      These basic principles are:
      • Employment is freely chosen, there is no forced labour or child labour.
      • Freedom of association is respected.
      • Health and safety within the work environment is paramount.
      • Regular employment is provided, living wages are paid and working hours are not excessive.
      • There is no discrimination on the grounds of gender, race or religion.
      • Points of manufacturing are regularly inspected by the Company. Products are manufactured in ICTI ethically compliant factories using responsibly sourced materials and child-friendly paints, stains and lacquers.

We recognize and understand that these principles can only be achieved by respecting the positions and involvement of individual employees, customers, and suppliers. We also have ICTI certificates for the factories.

      I hope this helps.

      Thanks
      Bigjigs Toys Ltd
